Yep, the Clagett clan made their way out to Angel Fire, NM for spring break 2013. It was most excellent too, because spring break for locals there and Texans back home wasn't until the following week. That meant our lodging was almost half off & we had the mountain was practically to ourselves! The weather was great, even if it meant the snow wasn't as bountiful. It worked in our advantage even though some of the trails were closed off for skiing due to obstacles in the path. Owen skied with us for his 2nd time ever skiing, and I was such a proud mama!
This was also the week our box decided to begin a burpee challenge, having to do 2x[date of month]. March 1 = 2 burpees
March 2 = 4 burpees
March 3 = 6 burpees.... and so on.
I'd like to add here that doing those in the mtns really sucks -- wind. Literally. You think you do ok at burpees and then all of sudden when you find yourself at a high altitude it's like your lungs forget how to work or something and you find yourself gasping for air like a poor fish does out of water. But I did them, and plus some while in the snow. Snow burpees!!

The first full day we went sledding. That's really fun - at least the downhill part. But it's work going back uphill. And I've already mentioned about the elevation thing. Anyway, we sledded, snow ball fought, tried to make a snowman but the snow wasn't the right consistency for our snow blob to get any height for a couple of hours. Time flies when you're having fun! It even flurried some for us that day, too. But the wind was awful. We'd heard a couple folks come off the mtn saying it was cold & windy and the big lift was closed for a bit due to the high winds. We were glad we decided to sled that day instead. It was all part of my grand master plan. The winds, however, had caused a little 4-seater plane to crash, and as we drove by it (since it was literally partially on the road) we saw 3 body bags. The local news later reported there were 4 fatalities. Sad times. But we didn't let it damper our spring break excitement. We went back later in the afternoon for more sledding fun and met up with a nice family of 3 with a son 1 yr younger than Owen from WVA. They had rented their sleds (we brought ones with us the Greens let us borrow), but the sleds weren't working very well. So we let them borrow ours. We were busy resting and trying to breathe anyway. Did you know 37# gets awfully heavy when you're dragging it uphill in the mtns? The answer is YES. If you don't believe me, go try it sometime. It's definitely a workout.
Finally we skied! It took Owen the first morning to get his ski legs back to working again before he'd brave going on a bigger lift and steeper hills. By the time the trip ended though, he'd accidently gone down a mogul black for a way before Ryan saved the day by picking him up and dropping him to a halt. They had quite the hike back to a skiiable trail after that. But everyone survived. Owen doesn't like turning -- who can blame him with the way legs/knees feel after snow plowing all day! And I think he really enjoyed the fast bits. Here's what first day morning skiing looked like.

I'll have to get video from Ryan's phone to post pics later of Owen's faster & harness-free runs. Talk about a natural! In the meantime, here's a vid of Ryan doing a couple of jumps. He was a little cross that the only time video was captured was the 1 time he fell doing it. But it makes for better viewing anyway. hehe
